Introduction of Kumagaya
|Kumagaya City is located in the north-westem part of Saitama Prefecture.
It is a beautiful ciyy surrounded by the mountains of Akagi and Nikko in
the notth and a range of mountains in Chichibu in the west. The Arakawa
Riyer runs through the cityand cherry trees along the Arakawa River bank
are in full bloom in spring.
Kumagaya is 65km from theof center of Tokyo and since the Edo period, it has been a key traffic point. At present, 4 national highways including route 17 as well as 3 railways, the Joetsu bullet train, JR Takasaki line and Chichibu Railway run through the city.
Whith the soon to be opened Hokuriku bullet train, the city is a major traffic hub in northem Saitama. With an area of 85.15km, Kumagaya has a population of 159,000 within 59,000 households, situated on wide spacious flat land. with rich natural soil and fresh water from the Arakawa River, Kumagaya produces quality agricultural products.
Since the Edo period, Kumagaya has been a majorcommercial city in the Kanto area, with it having the 5th largest annual product output in Saitama.
Since the 1950's many manufacturing companies have been attracted to the city's vast area. Some industries include; heavy machinery, ceramics and building materials.
Also high-tech industries are well represented with several manufacturers of semiconductors, computers and telecommunications equipment operating in Kumagaya.
Kumagaya has grown into a city well balanced not only in commerce but also inbustry Kumagaya was almost burnt to the ground during a massive air raid on the eve of World War 2, However the determined citizens of Kumagaya rebuilt the city with miraculous speed, and have been doing their best to make their city an excellent one.
The city of Kumagaya goes by many names such as: "Cherry Blossom City", "Festival City", "Rugby Town" and "Hoshkawa &Romance City". Kumagaya was chosen to be the main site for the 59th National Athletics Meet to be held in 2004. We see this as a great opportunity to show the city's vitality & attractiveness.
|KUMAGAYA episode 1933〜1942
Kumagaya achieved city starus quite early, among the cities in Saitama, in an era when Japan was moving precipitously toward war. In these years, Kumagaya laid a foundarion for community culture and sports activities; held its first sports meet, founded a city information guide, and began to compile a history of Kumagaya.
KUMAGAYA episode 1943〜1952
Kumagaya greeted its tenth year as a city, while Japan was at war. The nighit before the war ended,Kumagaya was bombed in an air raid that killed a great many people and reduced the city to ashes. In Kumagaya, a new townscape began to arise, as the city endeavored to rebuild.
KUMAGAYA episode 1953〜1962
Although Japan was steadily reconstructed sfter the war, its economic situation remained unstable. In these years, Kumagaya newly incorporated 7 neighboring villages, thus forming the present-day borders of the city. The city also began to invite businesses to its industrial zone and otherwise made progress in preparing an industrial foundation.
KUMAGAYA episode 1963〜1972
Japanese economy stabilized and the nation entered an era of rapid economic growth. The Tokyo Olympics were held, an event symbolizing Japan's emerging economic power. Torch runners carried the Olympic games. In these years, the city concentrated on building new culture-and sports-related facilities.
KUMAGAYA episode 1973〜1982
Kumagaya launched events oriented to resident participation, such as the Autumn Festival and Seniors Sports Meet, while new welfare, culture, and sports facilities opened in succession. The city endeavored to improve its facilities and services for residents.
KUMAGAYA episode 1983〜1992
Kumagaya ---the site of "Expo Saitama" an event held to broadly promote the attractive character of Saitama Prefecture. The event also did much to establish the identity of Kumagaya, which took on an increasing role as a core city of northern Saitama.
|KUMAGAYA episode 1993〜2000
In this decade, Kumagaya undertook city planning from a global perspective,The city entered a sister-city relationship with Invercargill, New Zealand and launched vrious internaional exchange projects for resident participation. Today, Kumagaya is engaged in city planning toward a future of richly rewarding urban living.
|The Kumagaya International Friendship Association
Comprised mainly of Kumagaya citizens, the Kumagaya International Friendship Association was established in June 1991 to promote and encourage International exchange.
Kumagaya is an international city at the hub of northern Saitama. Since the birth of the Association many exchange activities have takenplace. There include various language courses given by foreigners living in Kumagaya, such as English, Chinese and French etc.
These are also Japanese classes for foreign residents, international exchange parties, sightseeing bus tours, and homestay exchanges for young people to Kumagaya's sister city Invercargill in New Zealand.
If you would like to be a memberof the association the admission and annual fee is only 1000 yen for individuals and 10,000yen for enterprises and organizations. Newsletters are maiked 4 times a year, and members have priority in participating in all events.
Members receive various discounts for partcipating in exchange activities including ones for overseas trips.
The Kumagaya International Friendship Association was in 1988 awarded a special award by the Ministry of Home Affairs for its efforts in promoting international exchange and cooperation. The K.I.F.A consists of 4 departments: Cultural Exchange, Public Relations, External Affairs and the Interpreters Departments. The members in each departments play active roles in planning and holding events. We highly recommend that you join our association.
|Kumagaya City and invercargill City in New Zealand signed the Sister City
Agreement in 1993, Since then, there have been numerous exchanges in many
different fields between our two cities. Both mayors hadthe re-signing
ceremony in both cities in 2003 and they swore our further friendship.
This badge was made as a memorial to the 10th Anniversary of Sister City
